Many positions are open. An OSAA background check and OSAA umpire certification are mandatory.
Free training is provided at a 2-day clinic, usually in March. Training on rules and mechanics is ongoing throughout the season.
Pay is game-fee based. As an independent contractor, you are assigned games based on availability and your umpiring skill level. Games are primarily on weekdays with 4:30 p.m. start times. Umpires must arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled game time. Games are played only when weather and field conditions allow.
All assignments are made via an online system with email reminders and messages. Internet access is necessary to accept assignments and communicate with partners.
You must be teachable and have some knowledge of the sport of baseball. Working conditions include sudden starting and stopping, being on your feet for long periods, and working in varying weather conditions. Some athletic ability is required.
The high school season starts in March and ends in late May. The summer baseball season picks up in late May and runs through late August. Successful umpires can work 15–25 games per month. Some initial cost is involved: OSAA packet fee, SBUA dues, umpire uniform, and umpire equipment. Certain applicants can pay for equipment costs over time, with payment coming out of game fees. Game locations vary in the Salem and Mid-Valley area, and mileage is added to the game fees.
